Understanding the different formats of UK number plates

AB51 XYZ

Current Style

Introduced in 2001. Two letters (area code), two numbers (age identifier), then three random letters. E.g. AB51 XYZ.

A123 BCD

Prefix

Used from 1983–2001. Start with a letter indicating the year, followed by up to three numbers and three letters.

ABC 123A

Suffix

Used from 1963–1983. Three letters, up to three numbers, then a year letter at the end.

1 AB

Dateless

The most sought-after plates. No year identifier means they can go on any age vehicle. Combinations of numbers and letters.

ABC 1234

Northern Ireland

Three letters beginning with I or Z, followed by up to four numbers. Dateless, so can be assigned to any vehicle.
